Not rated, general health evidence
No pooled trials to rate. This rests on single studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Measured in the general population; we say so because ADHD trials of this do not exist or are too small.

Why it matters
General NHS guidance links restless legs to broken sleep and, in some people, low iron. An ADHD umbrella review found restless legs symptoms in 11 to 43% of children with ADHD across studies. Sleep difficulties are common in ADHD, so a distinct night-time leg problem deserves its own description instead of being filed as ordinary hyperactivity. Assessment and testing depend on symptoms, and iron supplements are not a general ADHD treatment.
How to do it
- Notice whether the discomfort comes on at rest or in the evening, and whether moving helps.
- Tell a clinician if it disrupts sleep, and mention tiredness, heavy periods or dietary concerns where relevant.
- Ask whether an examination or a blood test for possible iron deficiency makes sense.
Ask a clinician about testing and any supplements. An overdose of iron can be fatal for a young child, so keep iron products out of their reach.
Putting it into practice
In real life
- Describe an uncomfortable urge to move your legs when trying to sleep.
- Mention heavy periods and unusual tiredness if these occur alongside the leg symptoms.
Watch out for
- Common mistakeRestless legs are not the same as ordinary fidgeting. Describe when it happens and how it feels.
- Common mistakeTaking iron without an assessment can cause harm. Leave testing and treatment decisions with a clinician.
