Request a school support plan
A written plan can coordinate support between your child, school and clinicians.
Guideline advice, not formally gradedADHD evidence
Start with the time you have
1 minute
Write the single school barrier you want the support meeting to tackle.
5 minutes
Draft an email asking the school for a support meeting or a needs assessment.
15 minutes
Make a short list for the meeting: the barriers, the help already in place, and what your child thinks.
A plan
Agree support that can be reviewed
- Request a meeting or assessment through the school's process.
- Agree specific help and who will provide it.
- Review whether the support improves access and participation.
How sure the science is
Guideline advice, not formally graded, ADHD evidence
Recommended by ADHD clinical guidelines, but nobody has pooled the trials and graded how sure they are. Guideline advice is a considered judgement, not a measured certainty. Measured in people with ADHD.
AAP key action statements 5b and 5c (AAP grade A); CDC notes limited evidence for specific accommodations.
The number, drawn
Individualised school supports are a necessary part of treatment
Why it matters
The AAP says educational interventions and individual school supports should be part of ADHD treatment. A support plan names the barriers, the changes agreed and who provides the help. US IEP and 504 plans are one version, other countries run different systems, and the evidence for each single accommodation is limited, so review what actually helps your child.
How to do it
- Find out who at school coordinates support for pupils with additional needs.
- Describe what gets in the way of learning or taking part, including how your child sees it.
- Request an assessment of support needs and a written record of the help agreed.
- Agree who provides each support and when the plan gets reviewed.
Eligibility and legal procedures vary by country and school system. An ADHD diagnosis does not automatically decide which plan or adjustments a child gets.
Putting it into practice
In real life
- Ask for a meeting with the school's support coordinator and bring one classroom concern.
- If a quieter room for tests is offered, ask for it to be written down with a review date.
Watch out for
- Common mistakeA list of possible adjustments is not a plan for your child. Match each one to the barrier it deals with.
- Common mistakeMore accommodations are not always better. Ask your child and the staff which ones are earning their place.
