If suitable, try a few gentle movements from the guide with the recommended support, resting as needed.
A plan
Build a manageable strength habit
- Choose suitable exercises and support.
- Practise comfortable movements without rushing.
- Gradually build toward the weekly recommendation.
How sure the science is
Not rated, general health evidence
No pooled trials to rate. This rests on single studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Measured in the general population; we say so because ADHD trials of this do not exist or are too small.
General CDC activity recommendations and NHS exercise guidance, with ADHD obesity association evidence; no formal certainty rating.

Why it matters
Strength activity supports health and mobility in the general population. Observational reviews find higher rates of obesity in adults with ADHD, which is a reason to look after physical health broadly. This is general health advice, not evidence that strength exercises treat ADHD symptoms.
How to do it
- Pick a few suitable movements from the NHS illustrated guide.
- Use a stable chair or other support as the guide shows, and build up gradually.
- Work toward strength activity on at least two days a week, adapting it if you need to.
Get advice on adapting exercise if illness, injury, balance problems or pain get in the way.
Putting it into practice
In real life
- Use the NHS guide to learn a gentle chair-based starting exercise.
- Ask a physiotherapist about adaptations if standing movements are difficult.
Watch out for
- Common mistakeHeavy loads at the start can make the next session harder. Learn comfortable movements first.
- Common mistakePain is not a progress target, so stop and seek advice if a movement hurts.
