Say what you can offer, and ask for help when demands outrun what you've got.

**The number:** Set boundaries on the help you can offer ([NHS Every Mind Matters, 2026](https://www.nhs.uk/every-mind-matters/lifes-challenges/maintaining-healthy-relationships-and-mental-wellbeing/))

## The evidence

- How sure: Certainty of evidence: Not rated. Measured in the general population; we say so because ADHD trials of this do not exist or are too small.
- Evidence grade: C. Grade C: small or mixed studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Worth knowing, not worth betting on.
- Basis: General NHS stress and relationship guidance with ADHD-specific functional relevance; no tested ADHD burnout protocol.
- Benefit: 43/100. The benefit score is an editorial prioritization for the general list, weighted by certainty. It is not a prediction of what will happen for you.

## Why it matters

General NHS guidance links sustained stress with exhaustion and recommends support and clear personal boundaries. ADHD adds pressure, since work problems and strained relationships are common in adults with the condition. Setting a limit is a practical option. These sources give no established ADHD-specific effect on preventing burnout, and no diagnostic test for it.

## How to do it

1. Name the pressure costing you the most right now.
2. Pick a realistic limit, or a specific request for help.
3. Say it clearly to the person involved. If the exhaustion persists, get professional support.

## Talk to a clinician first

Persistent exhaustion, low mood or loss of functioning deserves medical attention rather than assuming it is ADHD burnout.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Say one kind, clear limit out loud: 'I cannot take that on today.'
- 5 minutes: Identify one pressure and one person who could help reduce it.
- 15 minutes: Prepare a short conversation about capacity, including what you can offer and the help you need.

### What it looks like

- 'I can listen for a little while, but I cannot take on this whole problem tonight.'
- 'I am struggling with the amount expected. Can we discuss what support is possible?'

### Common mistakes

- Waiting for total exhaustion can make a conversation harder, so raise the pressure while you can.
- Calling everything burnout may hide depression or another problem, so seek help for persistent changes.
