Give a strong feeling a little room before it turns into a message or an argument.

**The number:** Pause before reacting ([East London NHS Foundation Trust, 2026](https://www.elft.nhs.uk/adult-adhd-services/support-available))

## The evidence

- How sure: Certainty of evidence: Not rated. Measured in people with ADHD.
- Evidence grade: C. Grade C: small or mixed studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Worth knowing, not worth betting on.
- Basis: ADHD observational meta-analysis establishes relevance; NHS clinical guidance supports the action, without an isolated trial estimate.
- Benefit: 42/100. The benefit score is an editorial prioritization for the general list, weighted by certainty. It is not a prediction of what will happen for you.

## Why it matters

In a meta-analysis, adults with ADHD had more difficulty regulating emotions than comparison groups. An NHS adult ADHD service suggests pausing before reacting, agreeing a code word with loved ones so you can step away without conflict, and telling people 'I need a minute'. It's a practical coping idea. There is no reliable ADHD trial estimate for a brief pause by itself.

## How to do it

1. Catch your early cue: a tight jaw, say, or the urge to interrupt.
2. Agree a code word, or a phrase like 'I need a minute', and say when you'll be back.
3. Step away if it's safe. Come back to one issue once you feel calmer.

## Talk to a clinician first

If you fear you may hurt yourself or someone else, seek urgent help rather than relying on a pause.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Run it silently: 'I feel overwhelmed. Can we pause and come back to this?'
- 5 minutes: Identify your first warning sign in a recent disagreement and choose a pause phrase.
- 15 minutes: Agree a pause signal and a way to resume difficult conversations with someone you trust.

### What it looks like

- Before replying to a hurtful comment, say: 'I want to answer when I can think clearly.'
- After a disagreement, return at the agreed time and discuss the specific event.

### Common mistakes

- Vanishing mid-argument can feel like rejection. Explain the pause and set up a time to reconnect.
- A pause is not permission to frighten someone, so put safety first if anger is escalating.
