Get outside in the morning and let ordinary daylight nudge your sleep timing.

**The number:** Spend 20 minutes outside each morning ([NHS MyHealth London, 2026](https://www.myhealthlondon.nhs.uk/be-healthier/healthy-lifestyle/sleep/))

## The evidence

- How sure: Certainty of evidence: Not rated. Measured in the general population; we say so because ADHD trials of this do not exist or are too small.
- Evidence grade: C. Grade C: small or mixed studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Worth knowing, not worth betting on.
- Basis: General NHS circadian advice, with ADHD sleep association evidence; no rated trial evidence for this ordinary-daylight habit.
- Outcome: time outside each morning
- Comparison: general NHS London sleep advice, not an ADHD treatment effect
- Benefit: 38/100. The benefit score is an editorial prioritization for the general list, weighted by certainty. It is not a prediction of what will happen for you.

## Why it matters

In general sleep guidance, morning daylight helps set the body clock. Trouble falling asleep is more common in adults with ADHD, so this is a reasonable low-cost habit to try. Ordinary outdoor light is not the same as prescribed bright-light therapy, and a reliable ADHD symptom benefit has not been established.

## How to do it

1. Find a safe chance to go outside in the morning.
2. Start with however much daylight fits comfortably into your morning.
3. If your sleep keeps running late, talk to a clinician instead of buying a treatment lamp on your own.

## Talk to a clinician first

This means normal daylight, not looking at the sun or using a light therapy device.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Pick one safe spot outdoors you could get to soon after waking.
- 5 minutes: If daylight and conditions allow, spend a few comfortable minutes outside.
- 15 minutes: Try a short morning outing at a pace and duration that suit you.

### What it looks like

- Sit outside briefly after getting up if that is accessible.
- Take an ordinary morning walk when weather and mobility allow.

### Common mistakes

- A light box is a separate treatment. Ask a clinician before using one for a sleep disorder.
- Bad weather doesn't have to break a streak. Use the next safe chance.
