Relief, anger or sadness after a late ADHD diagnosis can sit side by side, with no deadline for feeling better.

**The number:** Diagnosis can bring relief, and sadness, anger or regret ([Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, 2013](https://leicspart.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Making-Sense-of-Adult-ADHD-booklet.pdf))

## The evidence

- How sure: Certainty of evidence: Not rated. Measured in people with ADHD.
- Evidence grade: C. Grade C: small or mixed studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Worth knowing, not worth betting on.
- Basis: NHS adult ADHD clinical guidance and NIMH explanation of late recognition; no trial estimate for identity or grief work.
- Benefit: 43/100. The benefit score is an editorial prioritization for the general list, weighted by certainty. It is not a prediction of what will happen for you.

## Why it matters

An NHS adult ADHD booklet describes relief after diagnosis, alongside sadness, anger or regret at not being diagnosed earlier. NIMH explains that teachers and parents may not have recognised ADHD, or may have provided supportive settings that hid its impact. That can help you make sense of your own reaction. It does not mean grief has universal stages, or that there is a proven timetable for adjusting.

## How to do it

1. Notice which feelings are there, without deciding which ones you ought to have.
2. Tell someone you trust what you are rethinking and what support you want now.
3. If distress sticks around or disrupts daily life, take it to a health professional.

## Talk to a clinician first

Grief-like feelings do not explain every change in mood. Seek help for persistent hopelessness, loss of functioning or thoughts of self-harm.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Name one feeling about your diagnosis and leave it as it is.
- 5 minutes: Write what the diagnosis helps explain and one question or feeling you want to discuss.
- 15 minutes: Read the post-diagnosis section of the NHS booklet and prepare a conversation with someone you trust.

### What it looks like

- 'I am relieved to understand myself, and sad about help I did not have.'
- 'I do not know yet what this diagnosis means to me, and I would like someone to listen.'

### Common mistakes

- Feeling pressured to be grateful can hide distress, so allow more than one reaction.
- Imagining a single perfect alternative life can become painful, so return to the support you need now.
