Keep the lived experience that helps, and check factual claims against reliable sources.

**The number:** 52% of the 100 most popular ADHD TikTok videos were rated misleading ([Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, 2022](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9659797/))

## The evidence

- How sure: Certainty of evidence: Not rated. Measured in the general population; we say so because ADHD trials of this do not exist or are too small.
- Evidence grade: C. Grade C: small or mixed studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Worth knowing, not worth betting on.
- Basis: Small cross-sectional ADHD-content study, not outcomes measured in people with ADHD; public-health information-appraisal guidance.
- Benefit: 53/100. The benefit score is an editorial prioritization for the general list, weighted by certainty. It is not a prediction of what will happen for you.

## Why it matters

In a 2022 study, clinicians rated 52% of the 100 most popular ADHD TikTok videos as misleading. That was a snapshot of selected videos. It does not estimate all ADHD content today, and it did not study treatment effects in people with ADHD. MedlinePlus suggests checking who runs a site, where its information comes from, when it was updated and whether it is selling something.

## How to do it

1. Pull apart 'this happened to me' from a claim about everyone with ADHD.
2. Open the cited source. Who was studied, what was measured, and how certain is the result?
3. Hold the claim up against an official health source before you share it or act on it.

## Talk to a clinician first

A relatable video cannot diagnose ADHD or justify changing treatment. Take diagnostic or treatment questions to a qualified clinician.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Take the last health claim you heard and ask: 'What evidence would let someone else check this?'
- 5 minutes: Open one source behind an ADHD claim and check its author, date and study population.
- 15 minutes: Compare one claim with the NIMH page and the MedlinePlus checklist before deciding whether to share it.

### What it looks like

- A video says everyone who dislikes waiting has ADHD; check the NIMH description of persistent impairment.
- A creator shares a helpful experience but sells a cure; check the evidence separately from the story.

### Common mistakes

- A confident delivery or a large audience is not verification, so follow the source link.
- One misleading video does not make all lived experience worthless, so assess the specific factual claim.

General information about ADHD, not a diagnosis or an individual treatment plan. Tailoring changes the order of suggestions; it does not assess you. Medication decisions belong with you and a qualified clinician.
