- Number 96 of 100 in the list: https://adhd100.jock.pl/#breathe-through-stress

When stress builds, comfortable breathing is one small thing you can try.

**The number:** NHS breathing exercise: practise for at least 5 minutes ([NHS, 2026](https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/self-help/guides-tools-and-activities/breathing-exercises-for-stress/))

## The evidence

- How sure: Certainty of evidence: Not rated. Measured in the general population; we say so because ADHD trials of this do not exist or are too small.
- Evidence grade: C. Grade C: small or mixed studies, expert consensus or clinical practice. Worth knowing, not worth betting on.
- Basis: General NHS practical guidance with ADHD observational relevance; no ADHD-specific breathing intervention estimate.
- Outcome: suggested duration of the NHS breathing exercise
- Comparison: practice guidance, not an ADHD treatment effect
- Benefit: 35/100. The benefit score is an editorial prioritization for the general list, weighted by certainty. It is not a prediction of what will happen for you.

## Why it matters

General NHS stress guidance recommends gentle, regular breathing without forcing it. The ADHD link comes from evidence of greater emotional regulation difficulties in adults, not from an ADHD breathing-treatment trial. It may help you settle in the moment. There is no reliable ADHD-specific estimate of how much.

## How to do it

1. Sit, stand or lie however feels comfortable.
2. Keep your breath gentle. Count slowly only if that helps.
3. Practise at calmer times, so the exercise feels familiar when stress hits.

## Talk to a clinician first

Do not assume new chest pain, faintness or severe breathlessness is stress. Seek medical help.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Get comfortable and just notice how you're breathing, without changing it.
- 5 minutes: Follow the NHS breathing exercise gently, counting only if comfortable; stop if you feel worse.
- 15 minutes: Read the guide, practise for five comfortable minutes and identify a calm time to practise again.

### What it looks like

- Sit back in your chair and let your breath move without forcing it.
- Skip counting if the count itself makes you tense.

### Common mistakes

- Breathing too deeply or too quickly may feel unpleasant. Keep it gentle, and stop if you feel dizzy.
- A breathing exercise cannot remove every stressor, so also seek help with the pressure itself.
